Back To School January 21
4th January 2021
As you may have already heard, the Government announced this evening the start of another national lockdown, including the temporary closure of schools for most pupils, until at least February half term.
For us at Mason Moor Primary School, we will continue with everything that has already been set up for Monday - Wednesday this week. All critical workers who filled in the Google form yesterday were informed of the school’s decision, and many children took up these places today. If, following today’s announcement, you feel that you would now like to complete one of these forms, you will be invited to do so tomorrow for a starting date of Thursday 7th January 2021. A new form will also be sent out for all those already completed to book in for future dates.
Parents / Carers of children who are in other eligible categories, including EHCP, looked after and vulnerable have either already been contacted, or will be in the next two days, to organise whether these children will be offered places in school.
Places for critical workers and vulnerable children must be kept to an absolute minimum to ensure that the lockdown is effective and social distancing is adhered to. This may mean that not all children whose parents / carers wish them to be in school, will be offered a place. I thank you in advance for your understanding on this matter as some very difficult decisions will need to take place.
The government has set out expectations for all primary schools to offer 3 hours of remote learning for children per day. At Mason Moor Primary, we have our own expectation of 4 hours as this is much closer to what our children would receive if they were in school. This learning will take place as live lessons, using Google Meet, with work to support the learning on Google Classroom. We have experimented with what works best for our children when bubbles have had to self-isolate in the past and have found that children are much more engaged and the learning is more effective when the teacher is live and interacting with the children. It is also great to see the smiles of the children’s faces. It also means that the children are able to see and interact with their friends and classmates.
Everyone should have received their child’s individual login details to gain access to their Google Classroom. If you do not have this, please contact the school office either over the phone or by email tomorrow. Once you are in the classroom, there is a link to the Google Meet that will be used for the live lessons.
Google Classroom and Google Meet works on most devices and mobile phones. If you are having problems, please contact the school office.
There is an expectation that ALL pupils access their learning on a daily basis. We will take registers daily and contact parents and carers where this is not happening. We may also contact our Educational Welfare Officer if attendance at the live lessons is deemed unsatisfactory. Please contact us if your child is poorly and unable to attend the lessons.
We look forward to seeing all the children on screen very soon. Keep well and stay safe
3rd January 2021
I hope you managed to enjoy the festive season and that you have had the happiest possible new year. We have all been following the news over the past few days, wondering what, if anything, the Prime Minister and Gavin Williamson, the Secretary of State for Education, would say about the re-opening of primary schools in the city. I am also in very close contact with the headteachers in our local area and the Local Authority.
I completely understand and appreciate how you all must be feeling at the current time in terms of both your child’s and your safety coming into school. This, alongside the safety of the staff, is at the forefront of my mind with all the decisions that are being made.
At present, the governors and I are not able to have certainty over the number of staff who will be available to support our pupils, either due to the union advice or because they are having to self-isolate. I, and the LA, feel that until I can be certain that we have sufficient staffing levels to ensure the safety of the pupils in the school, I cannot fully open the school. Mason Moor Primary School will only open tomorrow (Monday 4th January) for critical worker’s children, those with an EHCP for special educational needs or looked after children. If you feel that your job means that you are in the critical worker category, please let me know by completing the Google Form that will be sent out later today.
On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the school will remain closed except for critical workers’ children, those with an EHCP for special educational needs, looked after children and other vulnerable children. School will be contacting parents of children in this final group tomorrow to discuss this.
At present, we plan to fully open the school to all our children from Thursday 7th January 2021, but will keep you fully up to date when any new information comes to light.
From tomorrow onwards, we will be providing your children with online live learning through Google classroom. The first time to login will be at 11am tomorrow where teachers will welcome the children and set out the schedule for the day’s learning. I apologise for this not being first thing in the morning, but I am sure you appreciate the timescales here are extremely difficult.
Like all headteachers across the country, I believe that the best place for our children is in school. I want to assure you all that all members of staff at Mason Moor Primary School are doing everything they can to keep as safe as possible for the whole community. We thank you for your understanding at such a difficult time.
Keep well and stay safe

If anyone has any issues with drop off or pick up times due to using a childminder or their child/children being picked up by another family, please contact school and let us know. We are happy to change arrangements but this will need to be a permanent change - we will not be able to accommodate different times on different days. We need to try our best to ensure we do not let children mix between bubbles unless needed.
If there is a one off emergency - again, contact us and we will try our best to accommodate changes.
Thanks, Mason Moor Team (02380 390140, email@example.com)
